Desford FC was formed in the summer of 2003 by Hilroy Benjamin and Robert Portch. After stepping away from football management for a short period, the pair decided to establish a new club to continue their involvement in the game and contribute to the local football community.

Founders’ Background and Experience

Prior to forming Desford FC, Hilroy and Rob had enjoyed seven successful years managing Tolwell FC on Sunday mornings. However, increasing football commitments for their own sons meant they eventually had to step aside. Missing both the competitive and social aspects of football management, they felt their experience and skills should not be lost and decided to launch a Saturday football team instead.

Establishing the Committee, Sponsors and Home Ground

To support the new club, a committee was formed consisting of Hilroy Benjamin, Robert Portch, Craig McAdam, Glen Rajczyk and Glen Smith. The club secured its first main sponsor, The Bulls Head in Desford (with thanks to Shaun Markham), along with additional backing from Spitfire Inns and The Raj Mahal restaurant. Shortly thereafter, Kirkby Road in Desford was confirmed as the club’s home ground.

Building the First Team and League Progression

With the club’s foundations firmly in place, attention turned to the playing side. The majority of players who had previously played under Hilroy and Rob at Tolwell FC joined them again at Desford FC. The club entered the Leicester & District League, beginning in Division Two and steadily progressing to its current league position.

Growth, Development and Long-Term Vision

From the outset, the long-term vision was to build a sustainable football club offering a complete pathway from junior to senior football. Today, Desford FC has grown significantly and now boasts over 20 teams, ranging from Under 7s through to Open-Age sides. The club also proudly supports a ladies team, a girls team, and a thriving group for children aged 4–6, ensuring opportunities for players of all ages and abilities.
